In the recently shipped January issue of Mobile Display Report, we feature the latest news and analysis on all aspects of mobile displays, with particular focus on the hot trends at CES.
High on the interest list is our LED/Laser Projection coverage of the Las Vegas show. Our analysts were on the show floor and filed no less than thirteen reports just on the pico and pocket projection segment.
Laser-based, and especially LED-based small projectors are a very hot topic right now with feeding frenzy-like activity. As the Table of Contents from the current issue of MDR shows below, there are news stories on 3M, Displaytech, Explay, Jabil/Sypro, Luminus, Microvision, OMT, Oculon, SCRAM, Syndiant, Upstream, YLX and Young Optics.
We also have complete coverage of Novalux's acquisition by Arasor and the development of its new Nexcel T laser.
This info, and much more, will be integrated into updated market segment reports covering pico-projectors, and more, in a series of reports that Insight Media will release over the next few months. However, there is tremendous value in the news coverage contained in this newsletter - a good reason to be a subscriber.
Much of this information was obtained in private meetings in off-site suites at CES. Who else can provide this level of coverage?
Another topic that gained a lot of attention at CES was personal eyewear - you know, those head-mounted displays you see models wearing with aghast looks on their faces. With the risk of crying wolf, I'll go out on a limb here and suggest that the stars may finally be lining up for personal eyewear to actually move beyond their niche status.
The display systems offer much better images, they are sleek and ergonomic, they have good compatibility with popular sources of content like iPods and mobile handsets, and there is content to view. And most importantly, prices are now at consumer levels - $200 to $300.
An informal polling of personal eyewear makers and panel providers showed 2007 sales were up considerably, and they are expected to increase significantly again in 2008. The rush to provide products for the Beijing Olympics has lots of Chinese developers moving into this market.
And, companies like Myvu spent all kinds of marketing dollars to gain some visibility at CES. I suspect this worked, as it was hard not to be exposed to their personal eyewear in some way. The current issue has coverage of this segment.
And you get more (no, not the ginzu knife!). For example, our first CES Trend Piece documents the latest mobile display initiatives from top tier companies like Sony, Panasonic, Kodak, Philips, Toshiba and the rest.
One developing technology that dominated the show this year was wireless delivery of content and the underlying trend toward lifestyle simplicity and ease of use. We characterize this trend as the move from a focus on digital technology to what technology can deliver (enhanced lifestyle) when executed properly.
But wireless was not restricted to content, and a new round of wireless power companies were on-hand at CES to show off the latest way to recharge those mobile devices.
Inductive coupling or other alternatives to keep the battery in full charge mode were revealed, as well as the unexpected "green" benefits in moving away from the power brick (who would have thought?).
Under Wired and Wireless Connectivity, we cover seven major stories including a look at Legend Silicon's new wireless chips, and a peek at what product offerings to expect during the China Olympics from their leading OEM customers.
There's also a review of the WiMAX G4 build-out with a story covering Sprint's "off-again, on-again" dance with the technology (it's on again, by the way). We also took a closer look at display interface standards and observed that, with all the new options, this may just escalate into yet another battle for market share in the industry.
So, why should you consider subscribing to our monthly industry reports when there are many free news sources on the web today? Insight Media offers unique perspective you won't find anywhere else.
We had nine display experts covering CES - that's more focused coverage than many other publications. If you get one good business development lead, avoid one bad supplier, or gain a heads up on a product or market opportunity before your competitors, aren't these valid reasons to subscribe?
