Sony Shifts Allegiance from Samsung to Sharp
By Ken Werner

Earlier this week Sharp and Sony signed a non-binding memorandum of intent to establish a JV for producing and selling large LCD panels and modules. Sharp's new Gen 10 plant, now being built in Osaka Prefecture, would be incorporated in the venture, with Sony's investment buying it 34% of the JV and entitling it to 34% of the plant's output.

3D Keeps on Rolling
By Matt Brennesholtz

A number of articles have come to my attention. None individually is Earth-shattering, but taken together, they show the interest in 3D displays is strong and growing.

Pioneer Puts the Breaks on 42-inch Plasma - But you knew that...
By Steve Sechrist

In Japan, the Asahi News Service said Pioneer Corp (Tokyo, Japan, www.pioneer.com ) will stop producing plasma panels in the 42-inch and smaller sizes to help shore up losses at the company's less efficient Kagoshima production plant. Pioneer will continue to include the smaller size displays in its product line-up, but source the smaller PDP panels from Japan plasma makers Panasonic and Hitachi according to the news report, but we're here to say - maybe not.

LCD TV Shipments Now Exceed CRT
By Aldo Cugnini

LCD TV shipments worldwide have overtaken CRT TV shipments for the first time, according to a report by market research firm DisplaySearch. We've long predicted the eventual demise of the CRT, the only question being the timetable. We're now seeing more evidence to plot out the future of flat screen displays.

Could A Front Screen Be In Your Future?
By John DiLoreto

Despite the growing popularity of home theaters, many of us don't think we have the space or the budget for an in-home, large-screen viewing experience. That exclusiveness is eroding with news this week from Quixel Research and a prominent front projection manufacturer.

LED Backlights Are Coming to a Notebook PC Near You
By Ken Werner

You can now go down to your local television store and buy an LCD-TV with a direct backlight utilizing red, green and blue light-emitting diodes - or RGB LEDs for short. The thousand-dollar premium Samsung charges for this feature, relative to a slightly less well-equipped 42-inch model with CCFL backlighting, is likely to deter most potential customers. But those willing to spend $2500 or a 42-inch set (and more for larger sizes, of course), will be rewarded with a very large color gamut, deep blacks, beautifully rich saturated colors, a very large true dynamic contrast ratio, and power savings.

Dinner and a Movie - Premium Style
By Chris Chinnock

A news story in today's New York Times caught my eye, so I thought I would tell you about it. The article described places with names like Cinebistro, Cinema de Lux, Cinebarre or Sundance Kabuki Theater and they feature upscale dining, plush surroundings and oh yes, a movie.

OLED-TV Production Investment Begins in Earnest
By Steve Sechrist

Itching to get you hands on a nice 30- or 40-inch OLED-TV? While you can pay $2,500 for Sony's 11-inch OLED-TV here in the US (less in Japan), you'll have to wait at least until 2010 before these larger OLED TVs hit the store shelves. The good news is that Sony announced today they will spend upwards of $203M "to accelerate development" for large OLED panels in the second half of next fiscal year (for Japanese companies, this runs April 1 through March 31). Sony's target is to have full production technology in place by the end of fiscal 2009 (March 2010). The bad news is that a good chunk of this money is going to buy-out its partner and not in new plant and equipment.

One Year to "D-Day!"
By Pete Putman

OK, now it's really starting to sink in. In 364 days from today, analog TV stations will turn off their transmitters all across the United States. One by one, those thousands of "lights" (some of which have been burning for more than 50 years) will wink out, replaced by shiny new digital TV transmitters.

Goliaths Pound David
By Art Berman

Dog bites man, a person dies and taxes to increase: some news stories should not come as much of a surprise.

Actually, there is a surprising part to the story told in this article, but it was last year's news. It started with a company with an unknown brand name. Through aggressive use of low pricing and high-visibility sales channels, it jumped from the pack and grabbed first place in North American LCD TV sales. The company was Vizio and it led the market for six months. All of us love to see an underdog succeed and the news reaffirmed our belief that doing a "Horatio Alger" was still possible. That was then.
