3D BizEx Event Will Showcase Top Thinkers in 3D Display Industry

Plan now to attend 3D Biz-Ex - September 18 & 19, 2007 at the Embassy Suites Burlingame (San Francisco, CA). This 2-day conference, exhibition and networking event explores markets, products and relationships across the stereoscopic 3D industry as well as other 3D visualization technologies.

Sessions include:

  • 3D Markets and Outlook
  • 3D Public Displays
  • 3D Gaming
  • 3D Cinema
  • Other 3D Displays and Technology
  • 3D TV
  • 3D Visualization

Stereoscopic and other forms of 3D visualization are clearly starting to move from a series of niche applications (nearly 40 that we have identified) into more mainstream use. The goal of this conference and exhibition is to highlight some of the key trends and opportunities in the 3D industry so decision makers can develop products and services to suit the growing markets. But just as importantly, we hope to gather a broad cross section of the 3D community, including end-users, to help facilitate information exchange and understanding about the 3D industry. At the event, you will hear from a number of outstanding speakers.

For example, Insight Media will kick off the event with presentation by analysts Arthur Berman and Matthew Brennesholtz. Both of these analysts co-wrote our 3D report and will provide updates at the event. Art will focus on describing how 3D technology is, and will, enter the home, while Matt will focus on the prospects for professional applications like cinema, signage and visualization.

3D digital cinema is hot right now as the installed base of 3D digital cinemas is expected to reach about 800 theaters by yearend. This has Hollywood and the exhibitors excited as 3D revenue out draws their 2D counterparts by two to three times.

Real D is building out the majority of the 3D cinemas adding components to enable a 2D digital projector to also function as a 3D projector. Lenny Lipton, a pioneer in the 3D industry and currently the CTO at Real D, will kick off the Digital Cinema session with a talk entitled, Next Steps in the 3D Cinema Revolution

His presentation will discuss the needs and hurdles for taking the 3D cinema industry to the next level of several thousand installations - a big ignition point for Hollywood to flock to 3D. Manufacture of the digital projectors is a gating issue, but what about the needs in production workflow, post-production and distribution? Lenny will offer some answers.

Dolby Labs is also angling to enter the 3D digital cinema market using a different stereoscopic technology. The company will describe their approach to the market and how it will complement and/or compete with the Real D approach. And, a special screening of their 3D technology at the Dolby facility is being arranged for interested attendees.

This session is also likely to feature a speaker from Paramount or DreamWorks to provide the Hollywood perspective.

One of the other hot areas is 3D TV. This year, Mitsubishi and Samsung will both offer DLP rear-projection TVs that are stereoscopically enabled. This is an important development, as this will begin to create an installed base of 3D TVs, which is a key ingredient to get other players to invest too.

Speaking for Mitsubishi will be David Naranjo, Director, Product Development at Mitsubishi Digital Electronics America, Inc. His talk will focus on the challenges at the retail level in trying to create bundled solutions of 3D content and accessories as well as compelling educational and information demos in TV outlets.

In addition, two other enabling companies, DDD and Sensio will describe the ways they are helping to prime the pump for 3D TV. These activities include conversion software for content from DVDs and cameras, plus simple ways to enable PC 3D gaming on these stereoscopically-enabled 3D TVs. This is a key component to help jump-start this segment.

Rob de Vogel, Sr. Director Business Creation, at Philips 3D Solutions will give a talk about the technology and market for 3D digital signage. He will focus on the status and trends of 2D and 3D digital signage, giving attendees a feel for the state of autostereoscopic 3D display development, 3D content for signage, awareness of the 3D option, roll-outs, etc.
