3D Workshop Proceedings Available
In mid November, Insight Media and the US Display Consortium (USDC) partnered to present the 3D Workshop in South San Francisco. The event drew about 100 attendees and featured a number of 3D display and accessory exhibitions and a full day of presentations by industry leaders.
It was a great chance for the many parts of the 3D industry to gather, network and talk about the status and future of 3D. The Proceedings of the 3D Workshop are now available for $249.00 USD.
Session topics included: Emerging 3D Display Technologies, Human Factors of 3D, 3D Acquisition & Conversion Technologies, 3D Image Processing Formats & Standards, and Markets & Applications of 3D. Presenters included: · Art Berman, Insight Media , kicked off the event by providing a comprehensive overview of the many 3D display technology approaches. "There are so many," explained Berman, "that in some sense this is part of the problem." · Robert Patterson, Washington State University
, gave a particularly fascinating talk about vision science and the human factors of stereopsis (3D vision). He described two pathways through the brain that processes the visual scene to determine the 3D characteristics. · Rita Turkowski, Web3D Consortium
, explained how this group is now on its third generation standard for the formatting of 3D content, mostly graphics based, not stereoscopic. 3D Digital Cinema was the focus of several talks from: · Matt Cowan, Chief Scientific Officer at RealD and Chairman of the DC28-40 Working Group on Stereoscopic Digital Cinema. · Chris Yewdall, the CEO of Dynamic Digital Depth · Jon Shapiro, the CEO of 3ality Digital Entertainment · Matthew Brennesholtz, Sr. Analyst at Insight Media · Lenny Lipton, CEO of RealD · Jon Shapiro, 3ality Digital
, explained how 3D camera acquisition and post-production equipment his company has developed is also transforming the way 3D movies can be made. · Rob de Vogel, Sr. Director for Business Creation at Philips 3D Solutions
, focused on the use of autostereoscopic 3D displays - those that don't need any glasses. He gave a compelling vision of how Philips is approaching the market with a full solution approach. · Pat Green, Director at Planar Systems
, gave a presentation on the use of 3D in medical applications. Here, 3D data sets of MR and CT images already exist, so finding better ways to visualize this information with 3D displays is clearly needed.
