Diguang Electronics Offers $200 LED Backlight for 32-inch LCD-TVs

In a meeting with Insight Media analysts and representatives in Shenzhen recently, Diguang (DG) Electronics (Shenzhen, China) President Henry Song provided some startling news. He announced that in August, DG will begin sampling a 32-inch LED backlight unit (BLU) for LCD television applications for $200 - a price that is only slightly higher than the $170 typically charged for an equivalent BLU based on the traditional cold-cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) technology. This is a potentially important breakthrough as LED backlights have so far been much more expensive than CCFL versions. [Full article with links]

China's JV's Abound - TPV to Purchase Philips TV Biz

LCD Glut Depress Prices, Profits and Capex

The LCD industry is operating at a loss as oversupply has led to price declines, erasing profits and delaying spending on new equipment. Recovery will not be in the cards any time soon. For example, according to DisplaySearch (Austin, TX) (www.displaysearch.com), first-tier 17-inch LCD monitor makers in Taiwan will need to wait until the second half of this year, at the earliest, before losses will end, even though prices are now stabilizing due to shortages in this size. Due to the decreasing costs for producing panels, margins for LCD monitor panels will rise to 10% to 15% in the next two years, DisplaySearch explained. [Full article with links]

China Reports Strong TV Growth but RPTVs in Doubt

Despite fierce competition and shrinking prices, China's TV market is growing at a healthy clip in both domestic and export sales. For example, overall Chinese sales of color TVs in 2004 rose 11% annually to 72.7M units, accounting for 55% of the world's total, according to Asia Pulse. In that same year, China exported 27.7M additional color TVs, 21.8% more than in 2003. [Full article with links]

US DTV Transition

Discussions regarding the DTV transition were numerous at the 2005 NAB Conference, including a session that gathered together broadcasters and CE manufacturers. Advertising commercials should sell better due to HD, according to James Goodmon of WRAL-TV (Raleigh, NC) [Full article with links]
