LED4Auto06: LED and HB-LED for Automotive Applications Report Released

Insight Media is offering a new report "LED4Auto06" which focuses on LEDs and HB-LEDs for Automotive Applications. High Brightness LEDs (HB-LEDs) are being actively pursued for use in automotive exterior lights as well as headlamps. In addition, HB-LEDs are in contention to replace conventional lamps and lower brightness LEDs on the interior of the car, too.

The report, published by Yole Développement, finds that HB-LEDs for exterior front lighting will gain an increasing market share over "conventional" LEDs for the car's interior. Driving this trend will be the accomplishment of a major milestone in 2007: GaN-based LEDs will reach a higher luminous efficiency than fluorescent lighting. This event will begin the ramping up of the solid-state lighting business in 2007, particularly for interior and exterior automotive lighting applications.

There are strong growth opportunities for HB-LEDs in automotive applications.  HB-LEDs offer many benefits, including:

  • Increased reliability (e.g. lifetime much larger than needed)
  • Use for both interior and exterior lighting
  • Low-power consumption and increased and power saving
  • Mercury free products

The LEDs small size also enables:

  • New design possibilities and high tech appearance
  • Increased integration

Moreover, in terms of safety, LEDs have a faster speed of response. LEDs light up approximately 250 milliseconds quicker than bulbs. At 100km/h speed, LED brake lights appear 7 meters sooner.

Large market opportunities also exist for HB-LEDs for exterior front lighting in cars. As the HB-LEDs performance increases, fewer chips will be necessary (less than 15 should be necessary in 2009 for all functions).

The cost objective for auto ($10/kilo-lumen) will be reached in 2010 for a wide range of HB-LEDs in exterior front lighting. However, HB-LEDs are expected to be available in high-end autos in 2007. Today a high-end car can have up to 200 LEDs and this figure is expected to grow in the future: it could be up to 800 LEDs in 2009. The market for HB-LEDs for exterior front lighting is relatively new.

The forecast for the market for automotive exterior lighting will be 40% of the total HB-LED automotive market in 2009.

The white LEDs market will be shared by 5 major players: Lumileds, Osram, Nichia, Toyoda Gosei and Cree.

Moreover, the recent interest for HUDs (Head-Up Displays) in cars should also benefit from the HB-LEDs technology. HB-LEDs are currently bright enough to be used as a backlight on an LCD, instead of CCFL, which should help to move more LCDs into automobiles too. The favored applications here are center console displays and entertainment systems.
