Expanded Color Gamuts for Displays A Webinar to explain the basics and opportunities for
Date: Thursday, May 10, 2007 Insight Media is pleased to announce its upcoming webinar on Expanded Color Gamuts for Displays. The original broadcast will be archived for 30-days to allow registrants access at a time convenient for them. Wide color gamut displays are in the market or coming soon. For example, Sony and Mitsubishi will soon introduce xvYCC enabled wide-color gamut TVs, DLP projectors using Texas Instruments' BrilliantColor technology are available now, as are digital cinema projectors that conform to the new DCI standard. In addition, wide color gamut cameras are coming, too. That means professional monitors and displays will need to be developed to support broadcast and Hollywood's needs as well. "The problem is that there seems to be little awareness of these wide color gamuts and some confusion about them," said Insight Media President, Chris Chinnock. " In addition, if content is not encoded in the new wide color standards, then users may not benefit from the amazing colors that are possible. Consequently, we have developed an educational webinar that defines these new standards, explains how and where they are being used, and why one should, or should not, embrace them." "For the last 40 years, television colorimetry has been defined by the CRT color space and cinema colorimetry has been defined by film. But this is changing rapidly as new display technologies become capable of supporting wide color gamuts. As a result, new coding schemes are being developed to encode content to provide a richer and wider color space for these displays," said Insight Media analyst, Matthew Brennesholtz. "These encoding schemes are needed to allow the user to see the colors on their LCD, PDP or projection display that are consistent with the director's intent." This webinar will cover the colorimetry of expanded color gamut displays and will include a discussion of:
The basic colorimetry section will focus on color differences, the real colors that exist in nature and desire to reproduce these in a display in order to give a realistic image. The talk will pay special attention to the evaluation and comparison of different color gamuts. A proposed standardized method to evaluate expanded color gamuts will also be given. Offering a display with a wide color gamut is a little noticed industry trend that should create new opportunities for players in the imaging, electronics and display industries. It can also be a nice way to differentiate a product. Who should attend:
Matthew Brennesholtz has worked in the display field since receiving his Masters of Engineering degree from Cornell University in 1978. He has worked on direct view CRT systems and projection systems based on CRTs, oil-film light valves, DMDs, LCDs and LCoS. In addition to system level work, he was involved in the design and testing of optical components for these systems. Currently he is with Insight Media (http://www.insightmedia.info/ ) providing consulting and other services to the display industry. Mr. Brennesholtz is co-author of the book "Projection Displays," author or co-author of 16 SID and SPIE papers and holds 23 US patents. He has also presented numerous tutorials on display related topics to the SID, SPIE and at other venues. At Insight Media, he has co-authored reports on LEDs and Lasers in projection systems, direct view LCD backlight systems, low-cost projectors and Stereoscopic 3D systems.
