The Need

Pocket projectors – small-size projectors powered by LED illumination sources, are an emerging part of the projection industry. They hold great sales promise as they can be used for professional as well as consumer use. But they have low light output and fairly high prices right now. This two-part report provides a very detailed look at the current performance of this state-of-the-art product as well as the estimated contract manufacturing costs associated with manufacturing it.

Report Objective:
There are two parts to the report:

  1. Contract Manufacturing Cost Analysis
  2. Optical System Analysis.

The objective of the Contract Manufacturing Cost Analysis is to develop a detailed component list of every optical, mechanical, electronic component and all materials in the Samsung SP-P300ME pocket projector.  Then, analysis of these components is done to develop detailed costing for each item in the projector.  This costing is based upon manufacturing 300K units in Korea. (The methodology used by Cypress Labs allows for the optional calculation of costs within any manufacturing country and at any production volume.)

Cypress Labs’ Contract Manufacturing Cost Analysis Reports provide the following:

The second objective of the report is do a complete disassembly analysis to determine optical fabrication, assembly, testing and alignment approaches, as well as choices made in thin film coating design.  Additional analysis looks at optical-mechanical design analysis, tolerance analysis, and alignment of imaging and illumination stages.

All this is used to assess the optical design and performance merits and weaknesses including optical layout diagrams of key components and the light engine.

Highlights:

The Contract Manufacturing Cost Analysis consists of a Word Document and two Excel spreadsheets, each with multiple tabs of information.  These tabs include;

The second spreadsheet contains photographs of the various components and subsystems of the projector:
